COR-TEN is unlike any material you've used in the garden. Here's what to expect.
Yes — and it's by design. COR-TEN (weathering steel) was developed in the 1930s to rust on purpose. The surface oxidation forms a protective patina made of copper, manganese, silicon, and nickel that seals the steel from further corrosion. Unlike ordinary mild steel, which rusts through, COR-TEN's patina is self-repairing and gets stronger over time. The warm orange-brown color is a feature — it's why architects have used it in landmark buildings for over 60 years.
Minor rust runoff is possible during the first few months as the patina forms, especially in wet weather. To minimize staining, leave an inch or two of clearance between the edging and adjacent concrete, pavers, or stone. Once the patina stabilizes — typically within 6 to 18 months — the runoff essentially stops. If any staining does occur during break-in, a commercial rust stain remover on the hardscape resolves it cleanly.
You can slow the patina with a clear sealant, but it isn't recommended — the rust IS the protection. Sealing it prevents the protective oxide layer from forming fully. Painting COR-TEN is possible but defeats its core benefit: the patina self-heals around scratches and nicks, which paint never will. Edge Right uses variety A606-4, the same spec found in the John Deere World Headquarters and the Barclays Center in Brooklyn — both of which have been aging beautifully for decades without paint.
Yes. The patina is a stable, tightly bonded oxide layer — not loose, free-floating rust. The trace amounts of copper and other alloy elements that might reach the soil are well below levels that would harm plants or beneficial organisms. COR-TEN steel has been used in public gardens, arboretums, and agricultural settings for decades without adverse effect on plant health.
No professional needed. Edge Right is a hammer-in system: panels connect with included clips, and stakes drive straight into the ground with nothing more than a rubber mallet. Most homeowners edge a standard bed in 20–30 minutes. Edge Right also bends around curves without cutting — score the underside lip with a utility knife and flex it to shape.
